The interesting thing about school based mental health is that it’s been a long time coming in terms of mainstream thinking. There’s been a lot of stigmatization around mental health. In my mind it’s been frustrating for more than a decade why schools have not engaged with community partners. It’s the ideal place to screen students at an early age. You know, we screen them for dental, we screen them for all kinds of things and finally we’re getting to the point where mental health, social emotional health, whatever you want to call it, is important and we have the capabilities now of early detection of students, young people, that are in the early stages of developing problems or challenges and that’s the time and place to detect it and to intervene when interventions are far more effective early on.
I had developed, over a decade now, a program called iSucceed and it was specifically designed for school systems to coordinate what they’re going to do with community partner agency providers that provide specialized services that school systems aren’t capable of providing. That’s not their background, that’s not their training, but in partnering it makes the ideal situation because schools are capable of administering a 2-minute screener, 10 questions.
It doesn’t require specialized training for that. They can administer the short assessment using the ADSI-E, the Adolescent Development Screening Inventory. They can use that information to make sure that they understand the unique needs of the student and what area the needs are in, in order to decide whether or not they ought to be referred to some specialized services or community agencies that can follow up and do a more comprehensive assessment. It also helps them understand what areas that the school system itself can work with.
For example, social competence, school adjustment, peer relationships, use of leisure and recreation time. These are all domains of functioning on the ADSI-E. The school is perfectly positioned to support students in development in those areas. They’re not so well positioned to support them in areas of psychiatric, or emotional health problems, or behavior pattern problems, or substance abuse or use.
